The FSC is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. It was founded in 1993 in response to public concern about deforestation and demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme.
FSC labelled products are made with consideration for people, wildlife and the environment.
Forests are inspected and certified against the 10 Principles of Forest Stewardship which take into account environmental, social and economic factors:
FSC is the only certification scheme endorsed by the major environmental charities including WWF, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and The Woodland Trust . It is regarded as the benchmark for all forest management standards.
FSC on product labelling is growing in popularity and recognition all the time, with many high street brands using it on their timber, paper and even food products.
The FSC uses a Chain of Custody system which tracks the timber from the forest to the paper mill and then to the printer.
To display the FSC Logo on their products companies must use an independently certified supplier who can guarantee that the material comes from forests that meet the internationally recognised FSC Principles and Criteria of Forest Stewardship. Only FSC certified suppliers with a COC number are allowed to apply the FSC logo to a customer's printed material.
Always ask to see a supplier's FSC Chain of Custody certificate the first time you request FSC materials.
